Assuming that the island, the hatch all of it are some sort of gov't experiment...what if the Hurley's use of the numbers set off some sort of "alarm" within the gov't agency responsible. They trace Hurley's knowledge of the numbers back to Leonard (institutionalized...where his ranting about "cursed numbers will go mostly ignored). The bad luck that Hurley has been experiencing (aside from gramps death) could all be a set up. The gov't would already know that after enough bad luck...sometimes people ( like Sam) just eat the end of a rifle. Danielle and team....heard a transmission that wasn't meant for their ears and have never been rescued, have possibly been infected with some sickness and only Danielle has survived( that we know of). Leonard and Sam hear the numbers....Leonard is locked up muttering to himself all day long, and Sam...after a decade of bad things happening to those around him....decided to Hunter S. Thompson himself. Hurley, trying to investigate the source of the numbers ends up on a flight doomed to crash....but by some strange occurrence, unexpectedly ends up crashing on the island of the aforementioned gov't project.
