Come unto these yellow sands, And then take hands: Courtsied when you have, and kiss’d The wild waves whist. The Tempest. Act i. Sc. 2
Hi, new to the boards, so forgive me if I'm making any mistakes.
I read that if you put the "numbers" 4 8 15 16 23 42 in a latitude, longitude format you got a location in the pacific ocean about where the "Lost" island is. Curiosty made me check myself and sure enough the location is pretty much on top of the Federated States of Micronesia.

Then I looked up the history of the island and found just a few interesting things.
Firstly the island was inhabited in 4000 bc. So it's very old and mysterious!
But more interestingly in the 1800's british and american whalers arrived and killed a lot of the island natives, a little bit like Ethan and whoever might be on the Island with him. These sailors also brought venerial diseases to the island. In Lost the french woman mentions that her colleagues caught a disease.
In the 1940's the us took control of the island and shut it off to visitors and natives. So we have a largely unihabited island.
In 1946 nuclear testing was conducted near the Island. And in 1947 military bases were set up on the island.
So it would be likely that some sort of "Hatch" type nuclear shelters would be set up aswell as radio towers.
I'm not saying that this has anything to do with the TV show but it does have some similarities.

Sorry if this has already been disgussed in detail but I've not seen a thread on this.

Well I have just posted elsewhere the concept of references taking us to the past, so your thread here takes us exceptionally into the past. I like this idea. For one thing it removes us some from the euro-centrism of the theories and gives a taste of the possibilities of the location in its own terms. Maybe more of that exists in the archives (if I know Drabauer it likely does---sorry for the pressure!).
You then point out modern history which is fair. And that would give some credence to those who favor a govt conspiracy solution. But maybe something was lurking around 4000 years ago on this particular island? I think that would be grand. A polynesian spirit fighting off intruders. I dont know polynesian history so I cant comment on the possibility of all this. Something to learn.

Extraordinary work on the Long./Lat.! Must've taken a lot of combos to come to that island (or any, really).
I think this might be something here, save the STD disease. Not gonna happen during PrimeTime.
Thanks for posting this, the odds of finding it were slim, man.
Thumbs up!

Wow, very, very cool! What I don't understand is the discrepancy between the way the numbers are listed in the show. They don't quite match the combos as Lat and Long figures.
Plus I doubt Danielle had to kill her companions because they caught syphyllis. Then again, I heard that wo antibiotics it can cause madness....(strokes chin thoughtfully)

Personally I think it would be great to see some regional pre-20th cent. history incorporated into the series. For more on Polynesian/Pacific history you may want to check out the Hawaiki thread.

That's cool. Someone else used the numbers for the same thing, but in a different combination, and got some place in Nigeria, where the smugglers were from. What order did you put them in, just for curiosities sake?

I broke the numbers into 2 groups of 3, then I used Latitude: 4.815 and Longitude: 162.342.
As far as the disease goes! I didn't mean that the survivors are going to get the clap! I just meant that maybe the writers used this place and it's history as the basis for their plot. This location might have inspired the location of the Island, albeit not the exact location but somewhere in the general area, it is a fairly Lost area. Then if they read into the history that might have inspired some of the plot too, mainly the nuclear testing, and government involvement. I'm positive that they'd only use this as a basis for the story and not AS the story but if they've done this maybe we could use the Micronesian scenario to predict what might happen in the future.
I'm sure there's some sort of supernatural element to the island too but that's for another thread.

Thanks jonnyfingers! Boonian is correct; there was enough chatter about island locations that I gave these discussions their own geography index: Lost Geography Index
But this discussion is unique, so I am indexing it at the top of the page. You might want to check the discussions on Nigeria, et al; most of those I've referenced in the numbers index under 4 8 15 16 23 42.

This is interesting. I just experimented a bit with what I know about their location (what we learned from the Pilot.) I made some (crappy ) pics, but here they are...
I guess this is somehow the "track" they followed. I could be wrong.
This is very approximately where they were, 6 hours in flight ( as the Pilot told Jack), when they lost radio contact.
NOTE: I'm not sure what scale this map is in, so have mercy with me if my 1000-miles-radius is way off course... =)
So... we're close to Micronesia, aren't we? I guess that if I'd been accurate it would have been closer... =)
