Okay... I was thinking that maybe the island is supposed to be like the
village in the musical "Brigadoon". It only appears once every
so many years. That's why Danielle's expedition showed up. Maybe the "others"
are people that were stuck on the island before Danielle?
Either that, or it's like the faerie country in medieval legends, or "The
Mists of Avalon". If you cross the mists into Faerie, you are in
a totally different world that is out of phase with our own.

That sounds similar to the Burmuda Trianlge theory. Or even a multiple
dimensions theory. Both of which have been throughly discussed on this
forum.
