What is't? a spirit?
Lord, how it looks about! Believe me, sir,
It carries a brave form. But 'tis a spirit.
The Tempest. Act i. Sc. 2
I think we have to accept the idea that we can not necessarily believe the proof of our eyes (See, Shannon dead-not dead).
If so, what else have we seen that we have pretty much accepted as true that perhaps ought to be questioned?
Maybe its time to consider the reliability of the reality of the "back stories."
Maybe these flashbacks are not true accounts.
At minimum, it may be they are tainted by the perceptions, and possible self-deceptions, of the characters themselves.
Or, perhaps they are constructed histories designed to bring into focus specific conflicts within the person which require resolution.

No. That's all I have to say.

People have accepted that Ethan kidnapped Claire and Charlie. That needs to be questioned. THe producers gave us massive hints that the fight with ethan was all in jack's head and thats really the only evidence we have that ethan is a bad guy. It is far more likely that Charlie and Claire went off with Ethan voluntarily, then Charlie intentionally led a false trail because they were being followed.
But I don't believe for a second that any of the backstories are false. What one survivor might say to another could be false but the backstories are true

I think we have to assume that hallucinations happen to one person in isolation (even when Kate revealed that she hadn't seen Jack's father, he was ALONE when he saw him). The only exception I would make to that is the pilot, or some situation where suggestion might encourage a "group" hallucination, by planting the same image into everyone's mind.

I refuse to believe in group hallucination.
