THE RESCUERS

KATE

When we dug up our younger past and heard
Our voices converse in arrested time
I wish that our convergence which murdered
You had kept me lonely and unwitnessed,

Your novice disguise no one could have guessed!
You vanished! Before I could run away,
Your bloody shell beside me saw no crime!
Shot, you wore a death mask in Iowa!

Mortal or immortal---which twin are you?
Pollux or Castor? High brother or low?

Your eyes in the night skies ships would shadow---
Yours is the light that other stars pursue.

My eyes follow planes which on sleeping sand
Have crashed from the heavens, from my own hand.
